The Foundation Ana María Iriarte is working on the difficult task of bringing up to peed with modern times the zarzuela Pan y Toros, with music by Barbieri, a piece that will be performed in Teatro Häagen Dazs Calderón, where it will stay until 19th of June. The ticket price for this great zarzuela is 30 Euros.

The main story of the zarzuela Pan y Toros are the political and palace intrigues of the end of the 18th century and the beginnings of the 19th century. It follows the story of the Jovellanos’ Diaries.

In those letters, Goya, Pepita Tudo or even Jovellanos himself talk about the struggle inside the court and the rivalries between the different social classes of the time: bourgeoisie, church, nobles and the people.

Thanks to this zarzuela, based on the story by José Picón, we will know the hidden side of the Spanish Illustration, with a ferocious critic of the aristocracy of the times.

Pepita Tudó, Godoy’s lover, personifies all the mistakes and evils of the corrupt and low aristocracy that struggles with the members of the illustration, among which are Princess de Luzaán, Captain Peñaranda, Goya or even Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos himself.
