After a long day visiting all the wonderful sites of Madrid, it is always nice to sit down, put your feet up and let the others do the work for you, namely, get others to the jumping and running to entertain you, not the other way around!

Teatro de la Zarzuela is the place that should be in all the diaries. The creation of this theatre dates back to the 19th century, when it was decided that Madrid needed a building that would offer performances prioritizing the music. And so 156 years later, it’s 150th anniversary was in 2006, Teatro de la Zarzuela is still the first and only theatre dedicated to music, song and dance.

This month, until 26th June, the public will have the opportunity to watch the performance of the Spanish National Dance Company, Compañía Nacional de Danza. With Nacho Duato, one of the greatest Spanish dancers.

However, the main performances in this theatre are of course those of zarzuela. Zarzuela is a typically Spanish genre, that blends theatre, dance and songs, with topics that are intrinsically Spanish. So, besides enjoying a wonderful performance, theatre goers will also get an insight into Spanish culture and traditions.

Teatro de la Zarzuela also has its own orchestra, the Community of Madrid Orchestra, that also plays in the auditorium in Madrid, el Auditorio Nacional de Música. The auditorium has a vast offer of classical music, performed by the Community of Madrid Orchestra as well as other guest orchestras. This week ends as well the Madrid Music Festival at the auditorium.
