Museo Arqueológico MadridOn the upcoming 31st of March it will be the first anniversary of the opening, after six years of works, of the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid (known as MAN), which has better access for people with reduced mobility, a more modern design of the exhibition route and more space. Inaugurated back in the 19th century during the reign of Queen Isabel II in the year 1867, it is one of Madrid’s most emblematic museums, located in the heart of the city next to Puerta del Alcalá, on the luxurious Calle Serrano, 13.

Similar in its vocation to the British Museum in London, MAN has an important collection of everyday objects of different historical periods and works of art representative of ancient Egypt, the Middle East, Classical Greece, Roman Hispania and much more. Its “Essential” section is very interesting, with a selection of 15 items of considerable value that come with the help of an audio guide that completes the explanation panels.

This way, you can see during the 96 minutes the visit lasts, items such as the axe of the Manzanares, one of the first stone items made by humans; or this museum’s flagship item, the Dame of Elche,, famous since its casual finding in La Alcudia de Elche, a figure which dates from the 5th century BC.

Another interesting theme route is the ‘Archaeology of Death’ route, which shows the first mass burials in Neolithic communities, the first individual tombs in the Bronze Age or the pompous tombs of the chieftains of Iberian tribes, as well as Roman and medieval sarcophagus. A voyage back in time that shows processes that today are established in funerary culture, such as cremation, which used to be practiced regularly in ancient Iberian cultures.

Whether it is following one of those routes or one a free visit, MAN is a must-see in Madrid and its price, 3 euros per person, is affordable for the whole family. It opens from Tuesday to Saturday, from 9.30am until 8.00pm and on Sundays and bank holidays from 9.30am until 3.00pm.
