San Isidro: Madrid dresses up in chulapos and chulapas
First, you must know the history of San Isidro. There are many miracles attributed to this saint. As mentioned in his time, this saint had the gift of finding water with ease. Thus, the May celebrations revolve around the relationship between San Isidro and water.
[...] beautiful San Isidro, patron of Madrid, that the water of the cliff you made come out. [...]
From May 6th to 15th, various religious ceremonies are held to commemorate this festivity: the Quinario in honor of San Isidro, the mass in the Collegiate Church of San Isidro, and the Eucharist in the Chapel of Cuadra de San Isidro.
Scrumptious!
Protagonists of this festivity are the traditional chulapos and chulapas, who, during the pilgrimage that takes place in Pradera de San Isidro, drink "the saint's water" that comes from the spring near the Hermitage of San Isidro. It is a tradition that is mixed with the appetizing custom of eating doughnuts and lemonade. This lemonade is made with wine, lemon, sugar, and chopped fruit, while, if you are going to buy doughnuts, you can choose between the "silly" ones, which contain eggs, the "list" ones, covered with icing sugar and the Santa Clara ones, made with white meringue. In addition, every May 15th, pastry shops get their act together and fill up with these little delicacies that are pure temptation. You have to try them all!
This year we are celebrating!
This year marks the IV Centenary of San Isidro. For this reason, the city is preparing to offer the public endless activities, where children, young people, and adults can participate in this celebration. In addition, for the first time since 1985, the incorrupt body of San Isidro will be exhibited.
Where?
The beginning of this celebration is carried out by the traditional parade of Giants and Big Heads, a parade before the reading of the proclamation in Plaza de la Villa, always led by some famous personality. After this proclamation, there are six days of festivities that the city offers, with countless parties, concerts, activities spread throughout the city: Plaza Mayor, Las Vistillas, Plaza de la Villa and Plaza de Oriente, Pradera de San Isidro, Retiro Park, the square, and Ópera, Juanelo, and Arganzuela streets, at the height of Madrid Río, the Planetarium, Lavapiés, and the Municipal Centres.
Music is one of the pillars of this celebration, so you can enjoy live concerts in many of the squares. These host dances, music, children's shows, dances, and San Isidro culminates with a fantastic fireworks display.
